Level 4 – Training to Compete

Junior Development II (14+ years)

This program will focus on developing advanced canoe and kayak skills, competitive development and refining skills under race conditions, building strength, speed and endurance, and effective goal setting.  Paddlers are expected to attend both on-water and off-water practices, as well as train on their own according to a provided training schedule.  Athletes are also expected to attend the majority of regattas throughout the racing season as defined during the pre-season’s goal setting period with the coaches.

Pre-requisites

  • Level 3 – Training to Train
  • have a positive attitude and willingness to learn, ask questions, and improve
  • willingness to participate in a variety of training (both coached and un-coached)
  • intermediate boat skills (comfortable doing long workouts outside of Alder Bay)

Group Goals

  • enjoy sport and demonstrate sportsmanship and teamwork
  • proactive in learning more about the sport, goal-setting, and assessing training and competition
  • advanced boat skills – canoe/kayak skills, balance and boat control, wash riding
  • aerobic capacity, endurance, strength, speed – paddlers at this level will be given a weekly training program
  • race planning
  • effective goal setting
  • develop healthy nutritional habits and time management skills
  • a variety of regattas

Fall/Winter Program (Oct – March 2018)
  • Practice Schedule:
    • Monthly training programs will be provided to athletes
    • Canoe/Kayak Paddling
      • Mondays 4:30-6:30pm, Wednesdays 6:30-8am, Fridays 6:30-8am – until Nov 8th due to lack of daylight, resuming Feb 5 
      • Saturdays 8:30-10:30am – shifting to 9:30am starting Nov 18th
    • OC6 Paddling – Starting Nov 20
      • Mondays/Thursdays 4:30-6:30pm
      • Location:  At the club’s Burrard Compound (By Vanier Park)
      • Goal is to do one or two OC6 events: Icebreaker, March Madness
    • Group Strength/Circuit Training – Starting Oct 7th
      • Saturdays 1-2:30pm
      • Sessions will be held at MVMT Academy and run by Coach Laurence – http://www.mvmtacademy.com/contact/
      • In addition, athletes are expected to be attending the gym twice a week on their own
    • Group Running – Starting Nov 15
      • Wednesdays 4:30-6pm (meet at FCRCC – seawall run)
      • Fridays 7-8pm (Templeton Park Pool track)
      • In addition, athletes are expected to be doing an additional run on their own
    • Swimming – Nov 17 until Feb 9
      • Fridays 8-9pm
      • Location: Templeton Park Pool (700 Tempelton drive, Vancouver, BC)
      • we’ll have the whole pool to ourselves
      • instructors will be working on stroke technique and fitness with the kids

    • Aug 5-13 – Canada Summer Games – Winnipeg, MB  (Level 4s who qualified)
    • Aug 12-13 – BC Cup #3 Regatta – Long Lake, Nanaimo
    • Aug 19-26 – Canadian Nationals – Welland, ON  (Level 4s who qualified)
    • Sept 9-10 – Pacific Cup Regatta – Whonnock Lake, Maple Ridge
    • Oct 14 or 15 – Long Distance Regatta – Fort Langley
    • Nov 10-12 – 2017 Fall Training Camp – Burnaby
