Youth Paddling

We have many exciting options to help keep your kids active!  Our sprint canoe and kayak youth paddling programs are structured based off the nationwide Canadian Sport For Life Long-Term Athlete Development model, and more specifically, the CanoeKayakCanada LTAD Model.  This model is designed to help kids develop optimally through stages.

Kids can enter our programs in 3 ways: CanoeKids, Regatta Ready, or directly into our Full Season programs (Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer).  Our Level 1 program is all about setting the foundation for kids in terms of skills, body coordination, fitness, etc. while having lots of fun.  And from there, they can continue to further refine their abilities as they progress into Level 2 and on.  As the paddlers become older and more focused about their training, they will have opportunities to participate at events like BC Summer Games, Canada Summer Games, National Championships and more!

Which entry point is mostly dependent on age and maturity; in the end, the goal is to help the kids find where they are most comfortable starting, and to help them develop and learn with those around them.  For example, a new 13 year old paddler may start off in Level 1 just to acquire their balance and basic skills, and very quickly from there, move into Level 2, etc.

If you’re not sure where to start, just ask! 🙂

What is the main difference between Regatta Ready and the Full Season Program?
Regatta Ready is geared towards introducing kids to the next level of sprint canoe/kayak paddling (beyond CanoeKids), in a 10-week sports camp.  It focuses on getting kids involved in a healthy and active lifestyle, with an emphasis on developing canoe/kayak paddling skills.  The kids will spend each week building their skills and fitness, and by the end of the 10 weeks, they will have the opportunity to apply those skills at a fun end of season regatta called Pacific Cup!  In other words, this program is a taster of where they could go in the sport, with an opportunity to try out racing as well.  After the program, if the paddler is interested they can join in the Full Season Program.

Our Full Season Program focuses on long-term athlete development, and thus, geared towards kids who know they have an interest in the sport, and would like to join the FCRCC Youth Sprint Canoe/Kayak team.  The team participates in regattas, camps, events, fundraisers, and more together throughout the year.  In other words, this program helps kids develop their athletic abilities over a longer-term, and helps them explore more opportunities in the sport, like participating in BC Summer Games, Canada Summer Games and more!

New paddlers are welcome anytime throughout the season!
If you would like to register after a program has already started, please contact and introduce yourself!  Tell us a bit about your son/daughter and their age, and we’ll let you know how they can get started.  Look forward to meeting you!
