FCRCC Great Grand Dragon Crews
Canadian National Team Trails 2010 (at Whister, July 2nd)
The IDBF is proposing to add a new age category at the 2011 IDBF World Championships, August 2011 in Tampa, Florida:
- Great Grand Dragon ... 60 or more on June 1, 2011
That will be in addition to the existing age categories above the any-age Premier division:
- Senior A ... 40+
- Senior B ... 50+ (also called Grand Dragon)
Now, it's not certain that they will add the GGD category - it depends on how much interest there is (i.e., on how many countries say they will enter crews for Tampa). Still, Dragon Boat Canada has expressed interest in the GGD category, and are proceeding on the assumption that it will happen.
And so, DBC has called for applications from crews who want to represent Canada as GGDs in Tampa.
An "application" is simple: enter a crew at the National Team Trials this year ... which, it so happens (!), will be held the day before the 2010 National Championships on Alta Lake at Whistler, the weekend of July 3rd & 4th.
So:
Pat Pawlett, with the blessing & support of the Club Exec, is leading an effort to create FCRCC GGD crews - Mixed, Open & Women - to be entered in the Whistler NTTs.
The goal is to win the right to be Crew Director for some or all of the three GGD-category crews at Tampa.

You should keep in mind that there's no guarantee that any of our crews will wind up going to Tampa, nor even that you yourself will get to go; it's more complex than a simple"win & you go to Tampa" deal ...
To explain:
The way the DBC selection process works (for the every-other-year IDBF Worlds - Club Crews are different), is like this:
- if more than one person (a Crew Director, in DBC terms) enters a crew in a particular age & gender category at the 2010 NTTs, then Race-Offs will be run at the NTTs
- the Director of the winning crew then becomes the person in charge of the 2011 Worlds age/gender crew
- but, if only one crew is entered (in a given category) at the 2010 NTTs, that Crew Director is by default in charge of the 2011 Worlds crew.
You can see the current NTT entries here (except GGD, which will not posted until Feb 16th); no doubt you'll recognise the names of some FCRRC folks in other categories.
Please note that this GGD-NTT plan is not the same as the Men's-Nats-2010 & Women's-Nats-2010 efforts which are already underway. Rather, it's in addition to those efforts - but is also complementary (different Coaches and practice times, etc.). You can even figure on doing both - if you're so inclined, and able.
For the GGD crews, you have to apply to be considered (and also eligible: the GGD minimum age of 60 by June 2011 means you must be at least 59 on June 1, 2010).
It will be a competitive crew selection process: Time Trials, fitness criteria, committing to attend practices, and so on.
For full details, please send a message to Pat, at ViceCommodore@fcrcc.com. She has written up a detailed Info Pak (including a fuller explanation of the Worlds selection process), and will send that back to you.
Since the deadline set by DBC for GGD crew applications is early February, please get to Pat as soon as you can; she needs to have your application by Feb 5th.
Paddles Up!
